Chapter History

Founding and Reach

The original New York Texas Exes (NYTE) was founded in 1926, making it the first official Texas Exes chapter outside the state of Texas.  For most of its history, NYTE was a relatively small chapter that put on a few social events per year.  Today, the chapter has officially become organized as Texas Exes - New York Chapter, Inc. with official membership of around 7,500 in New York state and parts of southern Connecticut.  Additionally, the chapter draws heavily from northern New Jersey and other areas of Connecticut, bringing the total footprint to about 10,000.

Events range from the traditional game watching, happy hours, and Texas Independence Day Celebration to the NYC Student Seminar, Distinguished Alumnus Receptions, and the Lone Star Chili Cook-Off.  Proceeds from all events benefit one of our scholarship initiatives.

The New York Texas Exes was formally incorporated in New York State as a Not-For-Profit Corporation on May 29th, 2008.

Scholarship

As part of our mission to represent and serve The University, NYTE has been providing in-coming students from the New York area with scholarships for over a decade.  The chapter has awarded one-time general scholarships, ranging from $500 to $2000 since the initiation of our scholarship program

In 2008, we awarded our first annually renewable Jamail-Long Challange Grant Scholarship which aims to boost minority enrollment at the University.  In 2010, the chapter committed $50,000 in support of the New York 40 Acres Scholar Endowment.   In 2011, the chapter created the Allan Sih Memorial Scholarship for excellence in volunteer work and designated its first recipient.  Since 2007, NYTE has increased its annual scholarship distributions from $3,000 to over $20,000.
