Tracy Garrison-Feinberg

Scholarship Co-Chair
My UT degree:
BS, Secondary Education (social studies), 1988
My hometown:
El Paso, TX (military brat, so I claim several in addition)
The number of years I've lived in NYC:
When and why I got involved in NYTE:
Moved here in 1999 from Boston, where I'd been active in the chapter there (secretary and VP); wanted to continue to meet Texans in the Northeast to soothe my homesickness for all things Texas, specifically Austin
My most memorable NYTE moment:
Helping to lead a group of volunteers refurbishing a garden in Harlem for 'Hands on New York Day' while I was seven months pregnant; the first Chili Cook-off I attended at 230 Fifth when I realized just how much this chapter had grown in ten years
I love Austin, TX because:
it is the best city on earth, period. Okay, specifics: Mount Bonnell, Zilker Park, Barton Springs, the Capitol grounds in the springtime, Town Lake, the Broken Spoke, Trudy's, Kerbey Lane (the original!!), and the best damn university in the nation.
I went to UT because:
I fell in love with the campus and programs the summer before my senior year in high school, and when I got an academic scholarship, it was a no-brainer.
My last meal would be:
Grilled NY Strip, grilled asparagus, a good bottle of wine, and some berry-filled dessert
My favorite place in NYC:
Battery Park and Prospect Park (Brooklyn)
The first song on the soundtrack of my life:
'The Wood Song' by the Indigo Girls
The last book I read (and actually finished):
Divergent and Insurgent, Veronica Roth (I read multiple books simultaneously--currently on Cloud Atlas)
My favorite trip / vacation in the last year:
West Cornwall, CT for work, Atlanta with family for fun
Interesting fact about me:
I had wanted to be a high school choir director and had planned to major in music, but parental advice/pressure pushed me into a more 'dependable' career as a social studies teacher, which ultimately brought me to NYC. Who knew?
